Vlog, with a V: Part 2

Now that your Vlog is established, lets take a look at how to take it to the next level.

Hopefully by now you have created your Vlog and have began chasing the ghost of Casey. We have taken a look in previous posts about the potential of Vlogging and Tips from the Pros for creating a successful Vlog. Similar to the 2nd post in this series I have taken a look through Youtube and have compiled all of the pro tips for building your Vlog, brand and community successfully. We have return appearances from Casey Neistat, Sunny Lenarduzzi and the Video Influencers. We will begin with “the Dos” and finish on some reflective questions to keep you on the right track, a Vlog compass so to speak.

The Dos

Casey Neistat- How To Get More Subscribers:

Casey keeps it simple in his video, from 5:13 he talks about how to get more subscribers and honestly, his answer is not exactly what you’d expect. He says there really isn’t any secret trick to gaining followers. Rather he says that the most important thing, is to make great content and you will find your audience, and once you have, NEVER LET GO.

Sunny Lenarduzzi- How to Grow Your Youtube Channel FAST:

  • Set your intention, focus on: the quality of your community, video comments, views and making sure content is getting traction rather than the number of subscribers you have.
  • Build your community from scratch, find like minded Youtubers and tailor your content to them – engage in multiple platforms with them (IG, FB, Snapchat etc.).
  • Focus on your niche- That’s what makes you special so work it.
  • Quality content- Tutorials, product reviews or entertainment based (Vlogs etc.). According to Sunny these are the most popular styles of videos on Youtube so see if you can create some in those areas.
  • Consistent thumbnails – This makes your videos recognizable among others.
  • Set up playlists- The more they binge on your channel the better.
  • Don’t seek perfection.
  • Don’t worry about trolls- “If haters ain’t hating, you ain’t doing nothing”.

The Video Influencers- How to Get Noticed on Youtube:

  • Clear branding- Separate your channel from the rest, give yourself a clear identity.
  • Rank your video styles in the search bar- Seek to find the popular video styles which are most searched and pair those with your style and niche.
  • Create shareable videos- Viral videos are one of the quickest ways to increase your influence.
  • Be unique and different/yourself- “Different is better than better”. Be the purple cow.
  • Collaborations- Two minds are better than one.
  • Social Media- Extend your reach, synthesize your platforms.
  • Find and connect with your target audience- Echoed by Casey and Sunny above.

  • How are your Vlogs unique and different?
  • What are your passions and strengths?
  • What recurring themes and segments can you add?
  • How can you make the video & production quality better?
  • What trends can you take advantage of?
  • What can you cut out?
  • Who can you collaborate with?

The above definition of a vlog is from the Cambridge dictionary, that’s how you know you made it as a word. Someone who vlogs is a Vlogger and that someone has an opportunity to build a great social media following and create a successful brand for themselves. The question is:

Unlike Jaden Smith, “the rest of us” (see my previous post “Watch me”) don’t have a famous Father in Hollywood to give us a silver spoon for the silver screen, so we have to be a little more determined and a little more creative. Therefore I have searched through some of the most successful Vloggers’ (Casey Neistat, Sunny Lenarduzzi, Alex Costa and Video Influencers) video tutorials and have compiled all of their advice into one big “How to” post. This post will feature the Dos and Don’ts of Vlogging and part two will focus on building your brand, followers and community.

The Dos

Casey Neistat (video link here):

  • Always be prepared with some sort of device – Casey has an advanced setup of a High quality Camera and Mic for planned segments but always has another quick access camera for spontaneous filming.
  • Have an underlying theme or narrative to each video – Avoid repetitiveness, be sure to have a new story for your viewers.
  • Have a format – Casey’s style: Time lapse at beginning, abrupt ending – Build a video style for yourself.

The Video Influencers (video link here):

  • Just do it- Be fearless.
  • People aren’t thinking about you- Get over yourself.
  • Be bold.
  • Keep it short- Don’t love yourself too much.
  • Your audience and community takes priority- Remember who the videos are for.

Sunny Lenarduzzi (video link here):

  • Have a plan- Make sure you have a vision of what you want to be perceived as and who you want to be to your audience.
  • Look at the camera like it’s a human- Talk to your audience not your camera.
  • Stop worrying about your camera- Don’t worry too much about the technical side of things, you can make a great Vlog with your smart phone. (If you are technically inclined, Casey and the Video Influencers both have videos about the best cameras, view them here and here).
  • Consistency- Be consistent with your plan and style.
  • Just Do it- Because Nike said so.

Alex Costa (video link here):

  • Make sure you only shoot the most important things from each day.
  • Remember what you said last shot to maintain continuity – Both pretty self-explanatory.

The Don’ts

  • Don’t go to loud places- be mindful of your audio quality.
  • Don’t stay out too late- If you vlog daily make sure you leave time for editing, oh, and sleep.

Sunny Lenarduzzi (see previous video):

  • Don’t introduce yourself at the beginning of each video- Treat the audience as if they know you because they are loyal followers, sometimes mention who you are at the end, most viewers are there initially for the video topic but if you’re good will stay for you.

The quote above is taken from a commercial which aired recently during the 89th Oscars. For those of who you may not know the suited man in the commercial, his name is Casey Neistat and he is one of the best and most influential Youtubers and Vloggers on the planet. He is the inspiration for my first of a multi post series. I have started to nurture an interest in Vlogging or Video Blogging and thought I would do a multi-part series with the Good, the Bad and the How to of Vlogging while touching on how it can be used to build the most important brand you can control, You.

We will see a lot more of Casey and other Vloggers in future posts but for now I want to focus on the quote above. We live in a generation blessed with incredible technological advances and a plethora of opportunity and pathways to use it. Things which were a luxury to a select few have become regular to the masses. The world has become smaller and our reach has become larger, largely in thanks to social media. The capacity to build one’s brand or image has skyrocketed in so many ways that are just waiting for us to master.

Vlogging is now one of the keys to influencing the four corners and Casey Neistat is the case in point. He boasts an incredible 6,700,000 (basically every person in Sydney and Brisbane combined) subscribers on Youtube and his videos have been viewed a combined 1,520,646,266 times (Not going to lie, I copied and pasted that number because it’s so big, honestly I don’t even know how much it is… is that over a trillion? Anyway it’s a lot). His apartment is also filled with many leather-bound books and smells of rich mahogany. He’s kind of a big deal. One person with two major cities worth of subscribers and over a trillion ‘consumers’ of his product. This is the power of Vlogging done well.

Now that we understand the power of Vlogging, in the next few posts we will look at how to harness this power and how to fail and end up viral for the entirely wrong reasons.
